Connect through strong relationships

A mentally healthy learning community is characterised by strong, supportive relationships between the people of that community.

No matter your position in Australia’s early learning services and school, you play a central role in fostering positive relationships, preparing children and young people for changing peer relationships, how to cope when relationships break down or become damaging, as well as supporting them wherever they are along the mental health continuum.

This module outlines how community connectedness can positively impact mental health and wellbeing and provides practical strategies for you to partner with families and other members of the learning community. It explores how educators can work together with the community to create an environment that promotes positive mental health and wellbeing, and the importance of positive peer relationships. It also introduces bullying and its impact on connectedness.

What you'll learn through this module
  • Describe how connectedness and belonging can positively impact the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people
  • Describe the qualities of positive relationships between people
  • Recognise how transitions between the home and learning communities, and progression through learning communities, can impact on peer relationships and mental health
  • Identify how peer relationships can impact on mental health and wellbeing in children and young people
  • Recognise how bullying can negatively impact on mental health
